Wallington : Wallington was mentioned in Domesday as Waletone and its name probably derives from 'Farmstead or village of the Britons'. The settlement grew around Wallington Bridge over the River Wandle and remained a small village to the south west of Croydon until the 19th century and the coming of the railways. Today it is situated in the London Borough of Sutton and was an important centre for the production of lavender oil around the time of the First World War and this is remembered in a number of ways in the local area, one of these being a large sculpture in the town.
