Edward I granted the monks of Burscough Abbey the right to hold a market in the 13th century and Thursday has been market day since then. The remains of Burscough Priory lie about two miles north-east of the town. The Derby Chapel in the mainly perpendicular church contains several effigies to the Stanley family.
