Cardiff is the capital city of Wales and a major city with impressive public buildings at its centre. It lies about 25 miles west of Bristol at the mouths of the rivers Taff, Rhymney and Ely. Originally a Roman Fort stood on the site of Cardiff Castle and for much of the Middle Ages the town grew slowly expanding in the 16th century through piracy and then substantially in the 19th century through the export of coal. By the First World War it was the premier port in the world for the export of coal.

Today the city has a vibrant centre with the University College set behind the National Museum of Wales. There are theatres and concert halls, leisure and sports centres, gardens and parks. The magnificent castle was principally built by the 3rd Marquess of Bute who gave the castle its unmistakable romantic outline.
