Shirebrook: Shirebrook is a small town north of Mansfield which was for many years the main industrial centre surrounded by collieries. Before the fortunes made from coal Mansfield was an ancient market town by the River Maun and known to have had a Roman camp. In the seventeenth century Shirebrook was in Derbyshire just to the west of the vast forest that linked the county with Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. The remains of Sherwood Forest lie to the south east of Mansfield and to the north of Nottingham. Communications: Shirebrook is about three miles from Bolsover and nine miles from Chesterfield.
