Cheltenham : Cheltenham was mentioned in Domesday as Chinteneham and had a church and five mills. Its name probably derived from 'enclosure or water-meadow by a hill called Celte'. In the Middle Ages it was smaller than its neighbour Gloucester but in the early 18th century mineral springs were discovered which considerably boosted the town's population. By the turn of the 19th century Cheltenham was a fashionable spa having been visited By the Duke of Wellington and George III.

In the first half of the nineteenth century Cheltenham was becoming increasingly popular following the fortunes of the fashionable spa towns. It is thought that the beneficial effects of the waters were due to the presence of magnesium and sodium sulphates.

Cheltenham is one of England‘s most attractive and elegant spa towns famed for its relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. The Promenade has well known shopping names, and Lansdown Place and Montpellier Parade are impressive Regency achievements in their own right. Cheltenham is well known for its Annual Arts festivals and of course the Gold Cup. There are many places of interest nearby including the Roman amphitheatre at Cirencester, Chedworth Roman Villa, Sudley Castle and the Gardens at Winchcombe. There are beautiful walks to have on Leckhampton Hill above the town.

The town has fine Regency buildings and elegant terraces and squares. Shopping is good with many well known retail names in the Promenade. The Cheltenham Music Festival is well established and is held every July with the Festival of Literature in October. The town has two famous schools and the premier event in the National Hunt season in the Spring.
