Leiston : Leiston was mentioned in Domesday as Ledestuna and had three churches and a mill. Its name is likely to derive from 'farmstead near a beacon-fire'. It is situated about two miles from the coast and about four miles north of Aldeburgh. The town prospered in the late 19th century and early 20th century with local firms such as Richard Garett & Sons who produced munitions in both World Wars and became famous for a portable steam engine and threshing machine. Sizewell nuclear power stations are nearby and the remains of 14th century Leiston Abbey lie about a mile north of the town.
