Folkestone : Folkestone is an ancient settlement and Cinque port about seven miles west of Dover. The remains of a Roman Villa have been found at East Cliff and the 13th century parish church is thought to stand on the site of a 7th century Saxon nunnery. In Domesday it was known as Fulchestan and already had five churches, more than 11 mills and a salthouse.

It remained an important port for much of the Middle Ages but it was the coming of the railways in the 19th century that brought renewed prosperity as the town became a major harbour for cross-Channel ferries. It is also a holiday resort and along the top of the cliffs is a grassy promenade known as the Leas and popular for walks. Further east is the main bathing beach beyond the old harbour. The Warren is still further east and is an area rich in fossil remains. Shorncliffe military camp lies to the west on the cliffs above Sandgate and it is from here that troops marched down the hill to embark on ships to the Western front.
