Bridgwater Gardens consists of 20 bungalows completed in 1999 with properties available on a shared ownership basis. Facilities include an alarm service and estate management services. Totnes was known as Totenais in Domesday and is one of England's oldest boroughs. It probably derived its name from 'Totta's headland' and lies at the highest navigable point on the River Dart about eight miles north-west of Dartmouth. It was once a Saxon market centre with a mint and some of the old Saxon walls and ruined remains of its castle can still be seen. There are many Elizabethan and Georgian houses and the historic Brutus stone is set in a pavement near the restored 15th century East Gate. One of Brutus' descendants, Aeneas, is reputed to have founded the Kingdom of Britain after his long voyage from Troy.
