Normanton : Normanton is about four miles northeast of Wakefield and in the 11th century was the site of an enclosed settlement. At this time three railway lines converged on the town and in the late 19th century Normanton station was the busiest in northern England. The town has a significant mining and railway heritage. Most of the coal mines were worked out by the mid 1970s.
