The Pavilions is situated off Alma Road to the north of the town centre and within walking distance of shops. The development consists of 40 flats with communal facilities completed in 2008. Peterborough is an ancient settlement of the south Angles on the edge of the Fens and mentioned in Bede in the eighth century. It is now famous for its Romanesque cathedral but it can trace its origins to a monastery that occupied the site from about 650. The new Abbey was begun in the early twelth century but not completed until the thirteenth. The first church on the site was founded in the seventh century and this was later destroyed and the second burnt down. Todays magnificent cathedral has a beautiful painted wooden ceiling and exceptional fan vaulting. The town itself has a busy centre and has much expanded from its original base along the River Nene supporting as it does a large farming area.
