Chingford was known as Cingefort in Domesday and had six fisheries and a mill. Its name probably derives from 'Shingle ford'. The town was once surrounded by rich farmland which has now been covered by Londons' relentless expansion northwards. It lies to the east of the great King George V and William Girling Resevoirs built beside the River Lea in 1951. Further east the River Ching flows southwards through Chingford towards Walthamstow and the Lea. A public golf course nearby affords sweeping views over London.
