Ayr is a town on the west coast of Scotland long associated with Robert Burns who was born at Alloway to the south and baptised in the Auld Kirk of Ayr. There is a Burns museum in the town. Ayr expanded in the early 14th century when it was designated a royal burgh and the first Parliament of Scotland was held in the town in 1315. A new settlement soon grew up across the river at Newtown. In the middle ages Ayr remained a busy port and developed further in the 17th and 18th centurys' with the growth of the textile industry. In the 19th century Ayr became a popular tourist resort particularly after the railways came making access to Glasgow easier. The MacLaurin Art Gallery includes sculptures by Henry Moore.
