North Shields is a town on the north bank of the River Tyne and began life as a small fishing port providing fish for the Prior of Tynemouth and as an export base for coal from the Priory's collieries. The town was in constant competition with its neighbour Newcastle, the burgesses of whom successfully restricted the development of the town's trade.

The parish church of North Shields was originally surrounded by open countryside but this soon became enveloped by housing as the town grew. The shipyards producing the 'Northumbrian Coble' and larger 'collier briggs' for transporting coal to London eventually declined. Following the demise of fishing, coal-mining and shipbuilding new industries moved into the area and the town is now well known for its call centres and light industry.
