Stone is in the Trent valley almost equidistant between Stoke-on-Trent to the north and Stafford to the south. It is an old market town and once the capital of Mercia. Henry III granted Stone a market charter in the 13th century and its is thought the town's name derives from the Old English 'stan' meaning stone. In the 18th century the town had many coaching inns principally catering for travellers on the London to Holyhead route. The opening of the Grand Trunck Canal to link the two rivers, Mersey and Trent, brought prosperity to the beer industry for a while continuing the tradition first started by the Augustinian monks. The coming of the railways ended the town's coaching and canal era.
