History : The Anglo-Saxon chronicle believed that the former Roman city of Cirencester was still an administrative centre when the Saxons came in 577. They could have approached the town along one of three Roman roads which meet here - either Akeman Street, The Fosse Way or Ermine Street. In the middle ages the town became very prosperous with the wool trade and its success at this time has left many beautiful seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings as well as the imposing Church of St John the Baptist in the market square.
Cirencester is an historic market town in the North Cotswolds with one of the largest churches in the county. The imposing Church of St John the Baptist in the market square is known as the 'Cathedral of the Cotswolds'. The town lies on the River Churn about 15 miles southeast of Gloucester not far from the scource of the Thames. In the middle ages the town became very prosperous with the wool trade and its success at this time has left many beautiful 17th and 18th century buildings. Today Cirencester still retains its status as the leading market town in the Cotswolds with an abundance of good shops and now a Waitrose and a Tesco supermarket.
