Northwich is a small town on the rivers Weaver and Dane. The original settlement was known as Condate and salt was extracted by panning from the underground deposits in Roman times. To the northeast of the town is the electrically operated Anderton vertical canal lift which can lift a boat up to a 100 tons and fifty feet in height. Northwich Abbey was dissolved in the 16th century.
