Exeter has excellent communications with the M5 skirting its eastern boundary and frequent and fast trains to London (Paddington) and west to Plymouth.

Exeter was an important west country centre before the Romans came when it was called Exanceaster - 'Roman town on the River Exe'. Regularly sacked by the Danes it later flourished as a port with continental trade until the Countess Of Devon famously built a weir across the river. The town suffered considerable wartime damage but some of the old buildings around the cathedral precinct survived. The beautiful cathedral is reputed to have the longest span of unbroken Gothic rib vaulting and is also noted for magnificent roof bosses.
