The city name means 'ford of the Oxen' and was strategically important throughout the middle ages. Two of the earliest buildings are the towers of St Michael and St George and the latter was part of the Norman castle and the remains of its motte can still be seen opposite Nuffield College. The colleges have a distinctly recognisable form being built around lawned quadrangles with halls and chapels. The Bodleian Library, one of the oldest and most famous in the world, was opened in 1602 and the Ashmolean in the 1840s.
