Peterborough is situated in low lying area of East England on the River Nene to the east of which are the Fens. The area has long been settled by Celts, Romans and later Anglo-Saxons who saw the establishment of a monastery known as Medeshamstede and which later became Peterborough Cathedral. In the Middle Ages the town developed around the Abbey and in the 16th century soldiers ransacked the Cathedral. The town really expanded after the coming of the railways and remains today a major stop on the East Coast Main Line about fifty minutes journey time from London. Designated a New Town in 1967 the town continues to expand and has one of the most successful local economies in the country. Peterborough is an ancient settlement of the south Angles on the edge of the Fens and mentioned in Bede in the eighth century. It is now famous for its Romanesque cathedral but it can trace its origins to a monastery that occupied the site from about 650. The new Abbey was begun in the early twelth century but not completed until the thirteenth. The first church on the site was founded in the seventh century and this was later destroyed and the second burnt down. Todays magnificent cathedral has a beautiful painted wooden ceiling and exceptional fan vaulting.
