Donnington Castle stands bereft to the north of the town. The town's most famous patron was John Smallwood who led over a hundred men at the battle of Flodden in 1513. John Smallwood, also known as Jack of Newbury, did much for the town and was reckoned to be extremely wealthy through the cloth trade.
