The town is about ten miles southeast of Charing Cross and has a large shopping area and two railway stations providing easy access to central London. There are several good restaurants, inns, a leisure centre and the Churchill theatre is well known.

HISTORY

There is a reference to 'Bromleag' in the eighth century with the name probably referring to a 'woodland clearing where the broom grows'. Bromley is also mentioned in Domesday as Bronlei when it belonged to the Bishop of Rochester and the Bishops were Lords of the Manor here until 1845. Today the town has a good range of shops and there are many parks and gardens and open countryside to the south and east.

Bromley is an old country town in Kent engulfed by London's rapid spread in the nineteenth century. It is now really an outer suburb of London and was once one of the city's largest boroughs though it still retains its market originally granted in 1205.
