Broadstairs is situated between Margate and Ramsgate on the Isle of Thanet in East Kent. It probably derives its name from the Anglo-Saxon word Bradstow and was known as Brodsteyer in the 13th century meaning 'Broad stairway or ascent'. At about this time the village obtained its first wooden pier and the fishing trade and smuggling generally was of considerable importance through to the 18th century.
