Birchington-on-Sea : Birchington-on-Sea is a holiday resort to the west of Margate with sand and chalk cliffs and Minnis Bay is a well known family beach. The village is first recorded in the 13th century and probably derived its name from 'bircen tun' meaning a farm where birches grew. The village is the largest in Kent and was a farming community and noted smuggling venue until the late 19th century when the railway connected the village with Ramsgate to the east and London (Victoria). The Powell-Cotton big-game museum is in Quex Park along with the Waterloo Tower, built by John Powell Powell and was the first 12-bell tower in Kent.
