HISTORY

Beckenham is mentioned in Domesday as Bacheham becoming Beckenham in the 17th century being then close to the border with Surrey. Today it is in the London Borough of Bromley, one of the largest in London and is largely a residential suburb with good local shopping. King William IV's imposing Naval Asylum was endowed by Queen Adelaide for twelve widows of naval officers.

The church of St George was built in the 19th century on the site of an older church with the tower being completed in 1903. Two additional bells were cast in memory of Cecil Rhodes. There are many local amenities and places to visit and several golf courses nearby including those at Beckenham Place Park, Shortlands, and Langley Park. To the south of Bromley is open countryside.
