Middleton-St-George is mentioned in the 13th century - its name coming from 'Middleton' meaning 'middle farmstead or estate'. It is probably the commonest of all English place-names referring to habitation. The affix comes from the dedication to the church. The village lies a little over two miles south-east of Darlington and north of the River Tees. Darlington is an old settlement on the River Skerne and of Saxon origin. It first became well known for its fine linen in the wool industry and then as a pioneering railway centre. The world's first passenger railway was opened between Darlington and Stockton-on-Tees in 1825.
