Southwood Court is situated off Southend Road to the south of the town centre and consists of 40 flats close to shops and was completed in 2006. Facilities include a visiting house manager and 24 emergency call system, lift, residents' lounge, communal laundry, car park and guest suite. Local shops are nearby. Billericay is about five miles east of Brentwood and probably derives its name from a medieval word Byllyrica meaning 'dyehouse or tanhouse'. At the time of Domesday Billericay is not mentioned as it was then considered to be part of Great Bursted which lies to the south. In the middle ages it is thought that Pilgrims would journey through the town and this might explain the number of inns. In 1381 the Essex rebels were defeated by the King's forces so ending the Peasants Revolt. Billericay has good shops and the town's hall contains memorials to four people who sailed with the Pilgrim Fathers. There is a mainline railway station.
