Darras Mews is situated close to local shops in Darras Hall, Ponteland to the northwest of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and consists of 19 flats with communal facilities completed in 1984. Facilities include a resident manager and alarm service, guest facilities and garden. Newcastle-upon-Tyne was once a Roman fort on Hadrian's wall and its name comes from the 'new' castle built by the Normans in the 11th century. Before then Monkchester was settled by a community of monks and the town grew in prosperity in the middle ages through its position on the Tyne and trade with the rest of Britain. However it was in the 19th century that the town seriously expanded with the further development of shipbuilding and heavy engineering during the industrial revolution. The River Pont runs through Ponteland to the north and for much of the 19th century the village was subject to flooding due to its low lying position. It was not until the late 20th century that major defence works were put in place and today the old marshland has been drained with new residential development in its place. The village has two major supermarket chains with Sainsburys and a Waitrose.
