Sandwich: Sandwich is an attractive old town and once an important port in the middle ages. A sea battle took place here in the early 13th century and the French were soundly beaten. Its prosperity declined however with the silting up of the river but not before the French had their revenge when they sacked the town in the mid 15th century. Today the town is almost two miles inland though the river Stour is still navigable along a five mile stretch which winds itself to the open sea. The Guildhall Museum in the town centre has many exhibits from the past. The Earl Of Sandwich gave his name to the English language when he once asked for beef between pieces of bread whilst gambling.
