Granby Gardens is adjacent to Granby Court Residential Home and consists of 19 apartments situated off the Stray in Harrogate. Some of the apartments overlook the Stray and others have views of Sutton Bank and the White Horse at Kilburn. Granby Court also provides 24 hour nursing care in addition to 42 bedrooms each with bathroom and a specialist dementia unit. Facilities include a resident manager and emergency care system, closed circuit television entry system and individual intruder alarms to all ground floor apartments. Harrogate is about 12 miles north of Leeds and was the most fashionable spa in northern England in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The town is famous for its crocuses which in the Spring can be seen on the Stray - a 200 acre common from which a path links the Valley Gardens with Harlow Carr Gardens; now part of the Royal Horticultural Society following the merger with the Northern Horticultural Society in 2001. The gardens stand on what was once the part of the Forest of Knaresborough, an ancient royal hunting ground and springs of sulphur were discovered here in 1743. The beneficial properties of the waters first came to light in the seventeenth century and as the curative powers grew so did the town. The Royal Baths opened in 1897 and quickly became one of the largest hydrotheraphy establishments in the world. Today Harrogate is an elegant flourishing town with wide open spaces, excellent shops, and many fine Victorian and Edwardian houses. There are frequent local bus and train services giving easy access to the nearby cities of Leeds and York.
