Eylesden Court is situated by The Green at the bottom of Church Street and consists of 22 flats and houses. The properties are set around an attractive garden square and were completed in 2006. Facilities include a resident manager and emergency alarm system, guest facilities and attractive gardens. Bearsted Green is about three miles east of Maidstone and was known as Bersted in the sixteenth century, its name deriving from 'Homestead on the hill'. The Green is an attractive part of the village north of the main A20 and there are local shops. Maidstone has long been an important administrative centre and was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Meddstane belonging to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Its name probably derives from 'stone of the maidens'. Today it is still a thriving centre on the River Medway and remains the chief market place for the agricultural produce of the area. The Archbishops stables, near the former country palace of the archbishops of Canterbury, is now the Tyrwhitt Drake museum of horse-drawn carriages. Nearby is Allington House, home of the poet Sir Thams Wyatt.
