Formby is mentioned in Domesday as Fornebei meaning 'village belonging to Forni' and historically was always a part of Lancashire. The area is likely to have been settled by the Vikings from Ireland in the 10th century. Formby Hall is a Grade II listed building dating to the 13th century with much of its land now given over to a golf course. Formby beach was the location of the first lifeboat station in the country in the 18th century.
