Hartlepool Abbey was founded by St Aidan in the 7th century and received its Royal Charter in the 12th century. With its natural harbour the town went on to become one of the busiest ports on the east coast in the middle ages. With the coming of the railways in the 19th century West Hartlepool developed and then in the 20th century decline set in with the shipbuilding and manufacturing industries. Today however the town has a new marina with much regeneration and new housing.
