Cirencester was still an administrative centre when the Saxons came in 577 according to the Anglo-Saxon chronicle. They could have approached the former Roman City town along one of the three roads which meet here - either Akeman Street, The Fosse Way or Ermine Street.

In the middle ages the town became very prosperous with the wool trade and its success at this time has left many beautiful 17th and 18th century buildings as well as the imposing Church of St John the Baptist in the market square. Today Cirencester still retains its status as the leading market town in the Cotswolds with an abundance of good shops and now a Waitrose and a Tesco supermarket. Nearby are excellent golf courses, leisure centres and Parkland.
