Abbeyfield House consists of seven studio flats with resident staff and community alarm service. Facilities include resident staff and community alarm service, lift, lounge, laundry, guest facilities, dining room, conservatory and garden. Chippenham was mentioned in Domseday as Chepeham and had twelve mills and a church and was an important Saxon town. It lies on the River Avon and in the ninth century King Alfred's army was defeated here by the Danes and later in the same year (878) the town was recaptured. Its name probably comes from 'Cippa's river-meadow'. Today Chippenham has a wide range of amenities including a leisure centre, cinema, library and public parks with a comprehensive shopping centre. It developed in the nineteenth century as an engineering town outgrowing many of the beautiful surrounding villages such as Lacock and Castle Combe. The later was even a larger settlement in the sixteenth century. Tenure: Licence.
