Droitwich is mentioned in Domesday as Wich and had many salt-houses and was one a centre of Saxon salt production. Its name derives from 'Dirty or muddy salt-works'. In Roman times the settlement was known as Salinae. In the 13th century the 'droit' was added signifying the right, given by Edward III, to manufacture salt. The brine baths became famous as the water had a salt content ten times greater than the sea enabling bathers to lie on their backs and read the newspaper. Water was pumped from a lake over a bed of rock salt 200 feet below ground. The 19th century businessman John Corbett built the original St Andrews Brine Baths helping to turn the town into a spa. He later built a chateau in the style of Francis I which is now the Chateau Impney Hotel. The town has an attractive centre and there are several black-and-white timbered buildings set amongst the shops and restaurants.
