Maidenhead was known as Elentone at the time of Domesday and derived its name from 'landing-place of the maidens'. Its seven arch bridge testifies to the town's importance on the staging route to London in the eighteenth century. Turner's painting 'Rain, Steam and Speed' features the nineteenth century railway bridge designed by Brunel.
