Donnington Hospital Almshouses consists of nine properties completed in 1938 for single men of limited means able to live independently.

Facilities include estate management services and attractive gardens.

Newbury is mentioned in Domesday as having two mills and its history goes back to the Romans but it is largely known for its divisions in the Civil War culminating in two battles there. Donnington Castle stands bereft to the north of the town. The town's most famous patron was John Smallwood who led over a hundred men at the battle of Flodden in 1513. John Smallwood, also known as Jack of Newbury, did much for the town and was reckoned to be extremely wealthy through the cloth trade.

Today Newbury is a flourishing market town just off the M4 and has a good range of shops including the three supermarkets, Waitrose, Sainsburys and Tesco. The famous racecourse is to the south of the town.
