Cheltenham was mentioned in Domesday as Chinteneham and had a church and five mills. Its name probably derived from 'enclosure or water-meadow by a hill called Celte'. In the Middle Ages it was smaller than its neighbour Gloucester but in the early 18th century mineral springs were discovered which considerably boosted the town's population. By the turn of the 19th century Cheltenham was a fashionable spa having been visited By the Duke of Wellington and George III.

The town has fine Regency buildings and elegant terraces and squares. Shopping is good with many well known retail names in the Promenade. The Cheltenham Music Festival is well established and is held every July with the Festival of Literature in October. The town has two famous schools and the premier event in the National Hunt season in the Spring.
