Bearwater consists of 35 retirement cottages and flats set around two garden squares bordering an area of special scientific interest. The River Dun flows along the southern boundary and there is easy access to the town centre.

Facilities include a resident estate manager and attractive gardens and grounds. Each cottage or flat has an electronic alarm system activated by a small button-operated transmitter, to alert the secretary. The gardens are beautifully maintained and there is a short footpath linking through to the high street. All the cottages and the majority of the flats have garages with electric light and power.

Hungerford is an exceptionally attractive market town on the old Bath Road south of Junction 14 on the M4. The wide High Street has some fine Georgian houses and a variety of high class shops, including clothing and specialist food shops as well as supermarkets, chemists, banks, a post office and a library. The mainline railway station lies just south of the Kennet and Dun rivers, famous for their trout, which flow through the town. Hungerford was granted fishing rights by John of Gaunt in the 14th century and this is celebrated annually at Hocktide, on the Tuesday of Easter week, a colourful ceremony featuring the famous Tutti men.
