Bearwater consists of 35 retirement cottages and flats set around two garden squares bordering an area of special scientific interest. The River Dun flows along the southern boundary and there is easy access to the town centre.

The mainline railway station lies just south of the Kennet and Dun rivers, famous for their trout, which flow through the town. Hungerford was granted fishing rights by John of Gaunt in the 14th century and this is celebrated annually at Hocktide, on the Tuesday of Easter week, a colourful ceremony featuring the famous Tutti men.
