Castle Court was built by Devizes Housing Association in 1982 and consists of fifteen flats and bungalows a short distance from the town centre. Facilities include a visiting manager and emergency alarm system. Local shops and the town centre are nearby. Access : Devizes is to the east of the Pewsey Vale about 13 miles south-west of Marlborough and about seven miles from Melksham. Calne is seven miles and Westbury 13 miles. Junction 17 of the M4 is about 15 miles. Devizes is an old market town on the edge of the Salisbury Plain and probably derives its name from 'place at the boundaries' referring to the Hundreds of Cannings and Potterne which ran through the old castle. The original castle was destroyed in the Civil War and the present one is nineteenth century. The town has a long wide High Street with several Georgian houses, an old market cross and the Bear Hotel. Churches of most denominations are within easy reach and market days are Thursday and Saturdays in the town square. From the town the Kennet and Avon Canal climbs up twenty-nine locks, the longest flight in Britain, towards Caen Hill. There are many places of interest to visit nearby including Stonehenge, Avebury and the ancient Savernake Forest. Tenure: Leasehold General Information: Castle Court is managed by Devizes Housing Association, St Johns Street, Devizes, Wiltshire.
