Lincoln is an ancient settlement having been important in Roman times as the intersection of the Fosse Way and Ermine Street. The cathedral dates from the 11th to 15th centuries and its central tower is one of the tallest in England. There are many beautiful buildings in the town. The old castle is to the west of the cathedral.
