The town was first mentioned as Bremsgrave in Domesday having 3 mills, 4 hawks eyries and 6 lead vats for boiling the brine. Droitwich just five miles to the south was of national importance in the middle ages for its salt production. The town's name seems to derive from 'Breme's Grove' - Breme's grove or copse'.

The grammer school was founded in the 16th century and A E Housman was born here. The Avoncroft Museum of Buildings contains a wide range of historic property dismantled and reassembled here. The town was once famous for the production of nails and today is neatly by-passed by the M5 and M42. There are a good range of shops and leisure facilities with a golf course nearby.
