Romsey is an attractive market town on the River Test with good local shopping, including a Waitrose and department store, and several inns and restaurants. The Romsey Agricultural Show takes place every September at nearby Broadlands, an elegant 18th century country house surrounded by a 400 acre park landscaped by Capability Brown, the birthplace and home of the statesman Lord Palmerston and more recently Lord Mountbatten of Burma. Romsey Arts Festival is held every three years.

HISTORY

The town is mentioned in Domesday as having four mills and a church and was so named from 'Rum's island or dry ground in a marsh'. The village was sacked in the later half of the 10th century but the abbey was rebuilt and then later in the Middle Ages it grew substantially through the wool trade and the flourishing new Norman Abbey. This abbey succeeded the Benedictine nunnery founded by Edward the Elder in the early 10th century.

There are many fine period buildings including King John's House, a 13th century flint building rediscovered in the 20th century.
