The theatre has one of the oldest drama festivals in the country first begun by David Garrick in the 18th century.

The town has many old half timbered buildings and has been a market centre for many years with the Stratford-upon-Avon canal being completed early in the 19th century. There are many places of interest to visit including Harvard House, Halls Croft and not least the Shakespeare Centre.
