Sible Hedingham : Sible Hedingham was known as Haingheham in Domesday and had a mill. Its name derives from 'Sible' denoting land ownership from the family of a lady called Sibil in the 13th century and 'homestead of the followers of a man called Hytha'. The village lies on the River Colne about seven miles north of Braintree. St Peter's Church has a monument to a famour mercanary, Sir John Hawkwood, who survives in a frieze painted by Paolo Uccello in Florence where he died in the 14th century. The village has several old buildings including the 15th century White Horse Inn and the rectory, which dates from the 18th century.
