HISTORY Rottingdean is mentioned as Rottingedene in Domesday and probably got its name from 'the followers of a man called Rota'. Laid waste in the fourteenth century by the French it later became a haunt for generations of smugglers and it is thought that by the seventeenth century half the village was involved in smuggling. Rottingdean was home to the artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Kipling wrote many of his 'Just So' stories and the poem 'Recessional' in Rottingdean. Rottingdean village houses an art gallery and museum in the Grange, the former home of Sir William Nicholas. The village has restaurants, tea shops and inns and the sixteenth century Black Horse Inn was a well known meeting place for smugglers. Nearby Brighton has a rich variety of cultural activities with museums, theatres, art galleries and Europe's most lavish palace, The Royal Pavilion. It its own Philharmonic Orchestra and Glyndebourne is just a few miles away. There are several excellent golf and tennis clubs in the area and Sussex County Cricket Club, Brighton Race Course and the Marina, the largest in Europe with first class facilities.
