Sheringham Court was completed in 1995 and consists of 24 flats off East Road not far from the town centre. Facilities include a resident manager and emergency alarm service, communal lounge and laundry. There is limited parking within the development and local shops are nearby. Maidenhead was known as Elentone at the time of Domesday and derived its name from 'landing-place of the maidens'. Its seven arch bridge testifies to the town's importance on the staging route to London in the eighteenth century. Its fortunes have long been associated with the river and its attractions and boating in the latter half of the nineteenth century became very popular. Turner's painting 'Rain, Steam and Speed' features the nineteenth century railway bridge designed by Brunel. Today the town has some good shopping with library, several medical centres, sports halls and community centres. Maidenhead Thicket to the west of Maidenhead is ancient woodland now managed by the National Trust.
