Looe is on the south coast about ten miles east of Fowey and its name derives from 'pool, inlet referring to the pool or inlet at the mouth of the River Looe'. The two sides of the town are joined by a multi-arched bridge with East and West Looe being on either side of the estuary. Originally separate communities and a busy fishing port the two settlements are now very much a combined holiday destination and East Looe's narrow streets are closed to non-resident traffic. Looe Island was bombed during the Second World War and is now a bird sanctuary.
