Guardian Court Court was completed in 1990 and consists of 54 flats at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and close to the Parish Church of St Leonards in Middleton Road. It is within walking distance of shops and Banbury Railway Station. Facilities include a resident manager and emergency alarm service, communal lounge, guest facilities, laundry and gardens. Parking is to the west of the development and it is a short distance to the shops. Banbury is mentioned in Domesday as Banesberie with four mills and belonged to the Bishop of Lincoln. For much of the late Middle Ages it was a fierce bastion of Puritanism and nothing remains of the old cross mentioned in the nursery rhyme which was destroyed in 1602. The present Banbury Cross is a 19th century replica and Elizabeth I, Lady Godiva and a member of the Fiennes family from nearby Broughton Castle have been variously identified as the ‘fine lady‘ in the ‘ride‘ of the nursery rhyme. The Oxford to Banbury Canal was built in the late 18th century and the M40 in the late twentieth.
