Stanford in the Vale was originally in Berkshire and mentioned in Domesday as Stanford with two mills. There was a small Romano British settlement within the present village though the earliest reference is as 'Sanfordinga' in a charter to Shellingford in the 9th century.

Its name probably derives from 'stone ford' and was a small market town in the middle ages and in the seventeenth century the size of a large village. Today it is a thriving community with many active clubs and societies, two churches, two public houses, shops and various businesses.
